If you live near an ocean and it becomes your only water source for some reason, I would encourage you to at very least purchase (or make your own) simple distiller unit like the “Aquamate Solar Still” above. That would really get you by in an emergency situation without access to electricity. Of course, if you are trying to provide water for dozens of people you’ll need to scale-up or it will be insufficient.

Whatever water you get through boiling, condensing or desalination etc. you can still run it through your Berkey Water Filter / Purifier for the best possible water. It may seem like “over-kill” but it’s very easy to contaminate a water source and in an emergency that’s one of the last things you want.

So a couple of years ago I set out to find the best water filter and the best water purifier for my family.

Mind you, we have a pretty good supply of emergency essentials (mostly dried goods) but were lacking in water filtration and purification abilities.

Hurricane Season and Drinking Water

Well, its upon us once again… Hurricane Season! Not surprisingly, folks are starting to visit our site and call us asking some very familiar and great questions. They want to buy the Best Water Purifier just like you!

Here are the questions we get about safe drinking water during and after a hurricane.

1. Will your water purifiers filter and purify the water in my pool?
2. Can we drink flood water?
3. Will your system purify salt water?
4. Can we drink swamp water or polluted water?
5. How fast can we get a water purifier?

These are all great questions and have some pretty straightforward answers. Let’s take them one at a time.

1. Will your water purifiers filter and purify the water in my pool?

You bet! (But note the exceptions below.) In fact your swimming pool water is a great great backup water source! Since there is already chlorine in the water there is a good chance the water is fairly clean to begin with. The “Black Berkey Purification Elements” (Filters) will actually take the chlorine out of the water so it doesn’t taste at all like pool water. Your pool water will taste better than any bottled water you can get in the store.

Notes: One caveat on drinking pool water… if your pool relies on a salt based cleaning system it may not be suitable for use with the Berkey. Berkey water purifiers DO let dissolved minerals through and salt is easily dissolved in water so it becomes a dissolved mineral (at the ionic level.) Some systems put salt in and then take it out. That water would be fine to use. If you are using some types of harsh chemicals in your pool they may or may not be filtered out. It’s always best to check the Black Berkey Purification Elements capabilities info out before drinking from any questionable water source.

2. Can we drink flood water? / Will your purifiers clean flood waters?

Yes! Flood water is generally just normal water with lots of sediment and debris mixed into it. Of course you should try to find the “cleanest” flood water you can… if you’re going to pour it into your purifier. Many people will also “pre-filter” flood water by pouring it through a cloth or coffee filter in order to get the “big stuff” out in advance. It’s not required, but it will keep your system cleaner and extend the life of your purification elements. Also avoid flood water with oil, chemicals, dead animals, sewage and etc. If those things are in your water you should move hundreds of yards from them and get cleaner water for your purifier.

3. Will your system purify salt water?

Well, yeah, but the purifiers are not made for salt water and will clog readily. I wish that weren’t true, but that is a fact. You will get “pure water” (meaning the nasties are gone,) but it will be very salty. You need to desalinate salt water (brackish water) before running it through your Berkey.

4. Can we drink swamp water or polluted water?

Yes, swamp water is completely drinkable with our water purifiers. Again, if you are drinking water from a swamp, rain barrel, lake, river, or even a mud puddle you should do your best to start with the cleanest water you can and pre-filter it to get the big stuff out (not necessary, but a good idea.) If the water is really stagnant and nasty you may even want to boil it or add chlorine to it first. These are NOT required, but why take a chance? The cool thing about adding chlorine is that the purification elements will take it out after it does the job of killing off the nasties! Cool!

5. How fast can we get a water purifier?

We are pretty darn busy but most systems are shipping within 1 or 2 days.

Hi Folks,

Just a quick note about using your water purifier with flood waters.

Almost anything contaminating water during a flood can and will be removed with the Black Berkey Purification Elements.

If you ever find yourself stranded in flood waters there is a very real chance that your regular water supply will not be available.

That’s ok… most flood water should be safe to drink once you pass it through your Berkey Water Purifier! Exceptions to this might be if there is a lot of gasoline or other flammable liquid or high chemical contamination in it, or if it is primarily salt water. The purification elements are not designed to purify salt water, but I’d sure recommend you try if you are thirsty!

Floods are awful and at the time of this writing the Mississippi has far overflowed her banks and many are suffering. I sure hope folks have vacated the area, but if you are currently, or ever find yourself sitting on your rooftop waiting for help… Break out the Best Water Purifier and have a drink! It should be just fine and buy you the time you need to get rescued!

Safe Drinking Water Isn’t Just a Good Idea…

It Is an Absolute Necessity!

If you have been toying with the idea of buying the Best Water Purifier so your family could have safe drinking water should an emergency situation occur…now is as good a time as any!

Safe Drinking Water means you have access to water that can be drunk as is, or easily have any contaminants removed from it and/or neutralized before drinking.

Some seemingly safe water may be safe drinking water, but it is difficult to tell for sure. Most of us don’t carry microscopes around or know for sure what to look for when determining if water is safe for drinking or not.

Boiling water is the old stand-by, and in most cases will yield safe drinking water. Keep in mind that boiling water takes time and fuel. These may not be readily available during a crisis. You should also note that boiling water does not remove the contamination from the water, it just kills the critters (parasites and such) that may be in the water. If there was oil in water before boiling, there will still be oil in the water after boiling. Many contaminants do not “boil-out.”

Safe drinking water may also look cloudy or dark even after a thorough boiling. Though safe, it may smell bad, taste nasty and look awful…yet still be safe to drink. It’s a disgusting fact.

Of course the best way to get safe drinking water is to use your Berkey Water Purifier and not mess with the boiling or adding chemicals like chlorine or iodine which many consider to be contaminants themselves.

The water that comes from your tap may also not be safe to drink. The more we learn about fluoride and chlorine in our drinking water, the more people turn to a water purifier that is capable of removing these substances and returning water to its’ more natural state.

Purified water is more than a luxury and the availability of safe drinking water is largely in your control. Prepare now and have some peace of mind and easy access to safe drinking water without boiling and all the other hassles should a disaster strike. You’ll be glad you did!

I sit staring out my window at another beautiful day. The sun is shining as springtime finally approaches and there is a promise of good times playing in the warm weather ahead. I can hardly wait to take my boys out hiking and shooting in the mountains less than a mile from our home.

The rooftops in my neighborhood are shedding what’s left of the snow and there is a general feeling of calm and well-being in our cozy little corner of the USA . That description might also describe your current situation; I sure hope so. Life is good, friendly neighbors surround us, and the bounty of a great country founded on the God-given rights of freedom, as well as expectations of personal responsibility.

The tranquil, almost idyllic scene I just described tends to be the norm in “Anytown, USA,” meaning we have much to be grateful for – to say the least!

It only takes a single unexpected and unplanned event to disrupt the peaceful and perhaps complacent lifestyle so many of us enjoy. An earthquake, flood, fire, tornado, hurricane, etc. can change life as we know it in a few short seconds.

Less obvious events like a labor strike, another manufacturing company relocating overseas and displacing it’s workforce, a rail-way accident or impassable roads, etc. can be just as devastating. Any of these events (natural or societal,) can have an immediate impact on our ability to have all the food, water, and shelter we need for basic survival.

We, in our state of relative comfort, tend to think that disasters happen in other places…not here. All we have to do is watch the nightly news and mourn for those in far away places (like some other state,) and hope they survive the disaster. Thank goodness nothing like that ever happens around here. Although we genuinely feel for the people struggling to survive during disasters, we privately think “it couldn’t happen to us…not here.”

Well, personal and natural disasters are as much a part of life as death and taxes; it’s just a matter of time and to what degree they have an impact on your lives. This causes the wise to take pause and consider their preparedness for such emergencies.

What do you really need to survive? Well, not much really, but the few things we do need are absolutely essential. Yeah, we’re talking about Air, Water, Food, and Shelter (protection from the elements.) Surviving on this level, with only the absolute essentials, is not something most of us have ever had to do and thank goodness for that!

Its one thing to challenge yourself with a survival training course, but it’s quite something else to have your peaceful home-life suddenly turn into a survival situation. That will seem far-fetched to some, as it’s so easy to believe our calm neighborhoods will remain this way since they have always been.

Consider the years you drove down the road, perhaps speeding a little here and there and never really thinking much about the speed limit or the long arm of the law. Ah, the good ol’ days! Then, out of the blue, you get a speeding ticket and the life of leisurely driving you have always known comes to a screeching halt. You will most likely spend the next weeks, months, or even years reflecting on this one event, and it is very likely you will watch your speed a bit closer and keep an anxious eye out for lurking police officers. It’s simply human nature and a learning experience.

When a disaster strikes it’s not as simple as a “slap on the wrist” or a small fine. Life quickly slips into “survival mode” and the degree to which you are prepared for this sudden transition, and your ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions, can make the difference between comfort or discomfort, or even life and death.

We all know we should have a few things put away for emergencies. A 72 hour kit, some cash, food, water, ammo, first aid, toiletries, etc. Do you have these items? If not, they are easy to gather and can literally save your life when disaster strikes.

One solid earthquake in my area and our local water supply would be down for days or perhaps weeks. We have a river nearby, but wouldn’t really want to drink from it without first purifying the water. Boiling it takes too long and consumes fuel, which may also be limited or unavailable. Frankly, I don’t like drinking “boiled bugs” and feces much more than drinking “unboiled bugs” and feces. How to Purify Water

Many ask what is the easiest way to purify water?

Well, that depends on where you are and what tools you have available to you. To purify water on the hiking trail, the Sport Bottle Water Purifier is the easiest, lightest and most powerful water filter and purifier around.

If you want to purify water while camping…then the Travel Water Purifier, or one of the larger water purifier systems (if you have a big group,) will take care of all your purified water needs.

Now, truth be told…you can purify water by the following methods:
